Unfurling My Creative Wings

I am a detail-oriented, number-loving, type A sort of person. I thrive in orderliness and actually enjoy the process of paying bills. Weird, I know.

But inside there is a bit of creativity that seeks to come out. I dream of artists wings that draw the eye to things of beauty.

Desire far outweighs talent.

Yet I have always sought creative outlets. Wings, even small ones, were made for flying. Artistic expression can be very soothing for this numbers girl.

This year I decided to explore a life-long desire to be a photographer. Not a pro. Just a decent amateur. If I cannot draw pictures, perhaps I can become skilled at making them.

No, that is not a typo. Like me, you probably always thought of photographers taking pictures, but I have come to appreciate a quote that I hear again and again from Kent Weakley:

We don’t take photographs, we make photographs. – Ansel Adams

As Kent explains:

As photographers we have two choices, whether to ‘take’ or ‘make’ a photo. Many things in life look fine if we simply ‘take’ a photo of them. Occasionally we’ll even ‘take’ a great photo. However, to consistently create stunning photos that tell a story, we need to change our thinking a bit and ’make’ photos.

I am so grateful for the opportunity to unfurl my creative wings. Hopefully, I will soon be able to fly.

In hope,
Shelli

Sweet Shot Day

Among a number of  ”wannabe” wishes, I would love to be a photographer. Not a pro. Just a decent amateur. This year
I’m am being more intentional about making that a reality. Linking up Darcy is one way to share my photomaking journey.

  1. I think you’ve flown the coop, friend! 🙂

  2. I can really relate to what you’ve written here! I am a type A, order and systems loving, bill paying girl, too. Writing has become my creative outlet recently. I have always enjoyed writing but just since I started blogging have I seen and used it as a creative outlet.

And you “make” wonderful pictures, Shelli! I always enjoy them 🙂
