uncharted roads

I discovered last summer, while on a weekend getaway, that I really enjoy traveling new roads. The country roads that lead from one farm to another, lined with fences, or enveloped in trees. Doorways to rows of corn or golden wheat. Not getting lost, but not fully knowing where we are because there are no familiar markers. Just uncharted dirt, windows open, in no hurry to get anywhere.

It slows me down. I soak in the sights and smells, waiting expectantly to see what might be around the next bend or over the next hill. I savor every minute of it.

What a blessing it has been to recognize that I need not travel across the state to enjoy roads such as these, for they begin a mere mile from my home, in three directions. Oh, how many times I’ve traveled south toward the city, yet not traveled west, north, or east to simply enjoy the beauty of the land. Now, some of my favorite words are, “Do you want to go for a drive?” Oh yes, I do!

And I count the many gifts as we go. #1016 – 1026

  • a new appreciation for the location of our small town
  • uncharted roads all around
  • heading out, weekly now, to new places; an adventure waiting at every turn
  • taking the pup along

  • hidden sanctuaries

  • wide open spaces to see the bigness of the sky
  • tall corn, in spite of very late plantings

  • golden wheat; round bales

  • big red barns

In hope,
Shelli
